A galaxy is a massive, gravitationally bound system made up of stars, stellar remnants, gas, dust, and dark matter. Often described as the "cities of the universe", they contain anywhere from a few million to trillions of stars. The observable universe is estimated to hold hundreds of billions of galaxies
